Section 2.1.2: Contents of a Speech File Speech files may contain two types of data: header data and sampled binary audio data. The header can contain any information used to identify or process the sampled data. Examples of header data include the sample rate, number of samples, byte order, and minimum and maximum amplitudes. The content and format of a speech file header varies according to the file formats described in Section 2.1.3.
Not all speech files contain header data. Raw files contain only the sampled data. This requires the user to manually specify the type and format of the sampled audio data. Most sound files can be converted to this format. Common techniques for conversion are given in Section 2.2.2.
