CLAUSES AND SENTENCES

• A clause is any phrase that has both a subject (NP) and a verb phrase (VP) that has a potentially independent interpretation.
  
  
• A sentence is a superset of a clause and can contain one or more clauses.
  
  
• Some typical types of sentences:

  Declarative	I gave her a book.
  Yes-No Question	Did you give her a book?
  Wh-Question	What did you give her?
  Alternative Question	Did you give her a book or a knife?
  Tag Question	You gave it to her, didn't you?
  Passive	She was given a book.
  Cleft	It must have been a book that she got.
  Exclamative	Hasn't this been a great birthday!
  Imperative	Give me the book.
