HW 02: SPEECH PERCEPTION

  1. Plot the Mel and Bark scales as a function of normalized frequency. Superimpose on this plot the frequency response of the bilinear transform for values of a = 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, 0.9. Compare and contrast these plots.

  2. Generate 500 Hz sinewaves of amplitude 1000, 2000, 4000, 8000, 16000, and 32000 (assume 16-bit sampling at 16 kHz). Listen to them and discuss the relationship of amplitude to loudness. Repeat for 50 Hz, 100 Hz, and 5000 Hz.

  3. For the signals generated in problem 2, add Gaussian white noise until the tones can no longer be heard. Plot the SNR as a function of frequency.
